I believe in equal opportunity for all people of all nations. However, I see a lack of opportunity for Asian American students and International students. These two groups are the least represented compared to the other minority groups.
This lack of support has moved our culture to one where even we believe that in order to succeed Asians need to be hyper competent in every area to be respected and seen as an equal. Many stereotypes have lasted to this day even with pioneers like Jeremy Lin. Asians and Internationals will continue to view and be viewed in the light of stereotypes.
Why is this a problem?
Well this puts many Asians who are below par to be neglected even if he or she is equally competent compared to his or her white counterpart. Many Asian Americans suffer identity crisis' as well as terrible childhoods with tiger mothers and fathers. Some may still have helicopter parents.
Many international students are never respected because of a language barrier even if people think they are highly competent. They will always be viewed as "inferior" or "privileged". Many people don't pay any attention to them and segregate them in the community.
I believe that we can change the world's perception of Asians and Internationals. I see a world where equality is not just a dream but a reality. We need to provide opportunities for these underrepresented minority groups in order for our reality to realize. The iDEAS conference will be the first step.
The mission of this conference is to:
empower international and Asian American students by developing leaders in the global professional sphere through integrating Eastern and Western cultures and establishing an organization for the advancement of the Asian community.
